Coccyx atoms with heart failure

Coccygeal teratomas are malformed tumors in the lower back that can grow into the pelvis of the unborn child. A subgroup of these tumors grows very rapidly and is additionally supplied with so much blood that the heart of the unborn child can become dangerously overloaded.

In this situation, a minimally invasive procedure can reduce the blood supply to the tumor and normalize circulation in the child’s body. We perform this type of intervention at the DZFT between the 20th and 35th week of pregnancy under local anesthesia of the maternal abdominal wall. In the least invasive variant, radiofrequency ablation, the procedure is performed with a needle whose outer diameter is less than 1.5 mm. This procedure was introduced at the DZFT in Germany.

If you have any further questions about the minimally invasive treatment of this prenatal condition, you can reach us daily between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at (0175) 597-1213 or send us an email. If you only reach our answering machine, please leave your name and a phone number where we can call you back.
